Rejoice! Rejoice!

I shall open a new can of Old Speckled Hen to celebrate the failure of Charles Clarke's ID card bill! This is a great victory for civil liberties, and we can only hope that the swelling forces of Blair's successor (whomever that might be) will ensure it is completely consigned to the Dustbin of History. Identity Cards are an expensive distraction that will not provide any genuine protection. Even if they did provide some protection from terrorists, which I do not accept, the debasing of society's civil liberties would be sufficient to make them inadvisible.

  1. It's good news, yes, but it's only a reprieve. The ruling Party in Britain will not forego this key component of a police state and the bill will be back. Militant moderates everywhere need to be making plans for civil disobedience.

I don't think that's necessarily so. Besides, I happen to know that one of the most prominent Lib Dems in Oxford is firmly in favour of ID Cards.
